Before heading to business school, I was a business journalist with The Globe and Mail, Canada’s national newspaper. While I left the paper during the summer of 2005, I negotiated that I continue to write a column on my experiences at b-school. It appeared in the Careers section as my decision to do an MBA was based mainly on improving my career prospects. While I’ll be the first to admit that the experience was often tumultuous (scheduling time to study and have a personal life was tough enough, let alone write a bi-weekly column), I’m thrilled to have had the opportunity to essentially journal my first year of the MBA program. My school was thrilled too (big surprise!) and is now using my columns for recruiting/marketing purposes. They can be found below. Enjoy. And please feel free to email me your comments.
- Continuing Education (All of The Globe and Mail versions to date). No passwords required.
- Gut Check: MBA Year 1 “Continuing Education” (Schulich marketing package). Pdf format.
- Back Talk: Into the Inferno (YorkU alumni magazine). Scroll to the last page.
- Canadian Business writeup of Schulich, in which I’m interviewed.

Hi Richard,
I am a professional services sales manager for a small software company. I read your paper and found it comforting and inspirational. I have decided to write the GMAT. What I am seeking presntly is feedback from folks on how they navigated their way (leaving full time work, managing a mortgage, children, cost of living) to achieve their Masters.
Would you be open to a quick chat about your experiences?
Yours truly,
Nick
